Associate Professor, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and President at Invert Media

Jennifer Wemigwans is Anishinaabe (Ojibwe/ Potawotami) from the Wiikwemikoong Unceded Reserve. She is an Assistant Professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto, where she teaches in the Adult Education & Community Development Graduate program.

Dr. Wemigwans takes pride in working to invert the conventional use of media by revealing the potential for Indigenous cultural expression and Indigenous knowledge through new technologies, education and the arts. Her book A Digital Bundle: Protecting and Promoting Indigenous Knowledge Online (2018) explores the prospects of education and digital projects in a networked world.

Currently, her work develops new pathways for digital production with a focus on the convergence between Indigenous knowledge, the arts and education. This work supports the articulation of diverse Indigenous knowledge. Prior to joining UT, Wemigwans produced numerous resources in deep consultation with Indigenous knowledge keepers and elders from across Canada, the U.S., and Central and South America. She has earned a reputation for ethically translating Indigenous knowledge in ways that are consented and recognized by Elders and knowledge keepers. Her work in academia and online technologies puts her in a unique position to tap the pulse of innovation in Indigenous education, the arts, and media.
