eCampusOntario Announces New, Upgraded Digital Credential Wallet

New partnership builds secure, accessible credentialling platform

eCampusOntario is partnering with BCdiploma to deliver an upgraded Digital Credentials Wallet for Ontario’s publicly-supported postsecondary institutions.

The development of a new digital credentials wallet continues a collaborative relationship between eCampusOntario and BCdiploma, who have been working together to pioneer digital credentialing in Canada since 2019.

“As Open badges and micro-credentials continue to expand in Ontario, it is essential that we provide learners with a verifiable credential platform that reflects learner needs,” said Robert Luke, CEO, eCampusOntario. “The potential here is vast – from verifying competency to supporting employer recruitment, and ultimately helping learners find meaningful jobs.”

An eCampusOntario report found that between taking degrees, certificates, and micro-credentials at multiple institutions, it is hard to keep track of student login data (such as usernames, student identification numbers, and institution specific passwords). Ninety percent of focus group participants expressed that a virtual wallet for their educational credentials could be the solution to this organizational problem.

To support greater access, use and adoption, the new Digital Credentials Wallet will make it easier for learners to display their competencies for employers.

“Our continued collaboration with eCampusOntario empowers institutions with blockchain-secured software that future-proofs the credentialling system and ensures lifelong value for learners,” said Luc Jarry-Lacombe, CEO of BCdiploma. “Together, we are advancing a pan-Canadian agenda for open education and digital credentialling that will strengthen the Canadian economy.”

Available at no-cost, eCampusOntario’s new Digital Credentials Wallet will continue to provide safe and secure access while offering new upgrades based on learner feedback. The platform provides lifetime access to the blockchain-based e-Portfolio, offers users personal ownership to maintain independent control of their credentials, and will be accessible via mobile device.

Existing users’ open badges and credentials will not be affected by this change, and users will be able to import them to the new eCampusOntario Credentials Wallet. We will soon be sharing more about getting your organization set up to use the Digital Credentials Wallet. In the meantime, if you have any inquiries, please reach out to us at credentials@ecampusontario.ca
