eCampusOntario Supports a Collaborative AI Future for Higher Education, Skills and Innovation
TORONTO, ON — Canada’s new National Strategy on Artificial Intelligence, AI for All, outlines a bold vision to ensure Canadians can benefit from artificial intelligence through education, workforce development, innovation, and economic growth.
Delivering on that vision will require more than policy. It will require coordinated action across education, industry, and government to build AI literacy, accelerate workforce development, and support Canadian innovation at scale. Canada’s post-secondary sector is uniquely positioned to help make that vision a reality.
As a collaborative network of colleges, universities, and Indigenous Institutes, eCampusOntario has built the digital infrastructure, partnerships, and programs needed to connect learning directly to workforce needs. These capabilities position the organization as a national implementation partner capable of helping governments, employers, and educational institutions translate AI policy into meaningful outcomes for Canadians.
“Canada’s challenge is no longer whether we should adopt AI. The challenge is ensuring Canadians have the knowledge, skills, and opportunities needed to thrive alongside it,” said Robert Luke, CEO of eCampusOntario. ” Our post-secondary institutions represent one of Canada’s greatest strategic assets for delivering AI literacy, workforce development, and innovation at scale. The opportunity now is to mobilize that capacity nationally.”
Turning this vision into action requires coordinated implementation. eCampusOntario’s programs, platforms, and partnerships operationalize AI literacy, workforce development, and innovation across Canada’s post-secondary system.
In support of the National AI Literacy Initiative, eCampusOntario partnered with Durham College’s AI Hub to launch a free, bilingual AI Fundamentals micro-course series, available through Skills for Jobs Canada and the Ontario Micro-Credentials Portal, helping Canadians build foundational AI knowledge and confidence to use these tools responsibly. This work is complemented by eCampusOntario.ai, a hub providing practical resources and guidance to support AI implementation across institutions.
The strategy also aligns with Budget 2025’s commitment to modernize the Job Bank through AI-powered job matching. Through Skills for Jobs Canada, which is linked to the Job Bank, eCampusOntario helps Canadians identify skills gaps and connect to free and low-cost training opportunities aligned with labour market demand. Together, AI-enabled job matching and accessible training can create a more responsive workforce development system that helps workers adapt to changing labour market needs.
As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries, Canada must also strengthen pathways that connect learning directly to work. eCampusOntario supports work-integrated learning initiatives that connect learners with employers while helping organizations access emerging talent. At the same time, Ontario’s publicly assisted colleges, universities, and Indigenous Institutes provide a powerful network capable of delivering employer-informed training, micro-credentials, and professional development opportunities at scale for both students and mid-career workers.
Realizing the full potential of AI for All will also depend on Canada’s ability to commercialize its world-class research and retain the value created through Canadian innovation. Through initiatives such as the AI-enabled Ontario Collaborative Innovation Platform (OCIP.ai), eCampusOntario helps connect industry with post-secondary expertise to accelerate research partnerships, technology adoption, and commercialization opportunities. Initiatives like these are helping ensure Ontario and Canada retains the value created by its research and homegrown talent remains part of the Canadian innovation ecosystem.
The success of Canada’s AI strategy must be measured not only by adoption, but by participation. AI literacy and workforce development opportunities must be accessible to all Canadians and grounded in Canadian values, Canadian talent, and Canadian interests.
Investments in research security, trusted AI, and Canadian intellectual property will be critical to ensuring innovation benefits remain in Canada. We already possess the institutions, expertise, and digital infrastructure required to deliver on AI for All.
By mobilizing the post-secondary sector as a national partner in AI literacy, workforce development, and innovation, Canada can transform the strategy’s ambitions into measurable outcomes for learners, workers, employers, and communities across the country.
