Designing Micro-credentials for Adult Learners: Insights into Preferences and Priorities
Micro-credentials are specialized certifications that recognize specific skills or knowledge, offering flexible and targeted pathways to employment or further education. Despite their growing popularity, there is limited empirical research on what makes these programs appealing to adult learners. This presentation explores the program attributes that attract adult learners to micro-credentials, examining population and subgroup preferences for seven key micro-credential program attributes: instructional format, program duration, time commitment, provider reputation, employer connections, reimbursement options, and cost. By shedding light on learners’ preferences for these attributes, this presentation aims to help organizations design micro-credential programs that align with the diverse needs and priorities of adult learners.

Bridging to Employment: Using Micro-credentials to Address Skill Gaps and Support Workforce Integration for Internationally Educated Nurses in Canada
How can we bridge the gap to employment for internationally educated nurses in Canada? Bow Valley College’s Path2Practice program addresses this challenge by utilizing competency-based micro-credentials to enhance workforce readiness and facilitate seamless integration into the Canadian healthcare system. The program focuses on equipping Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) with the essential competencies required in Canadian healthcare, providing cultural insights, and developing practical skills. Organized around three key pillars—Canadian Context Courses, Role Simulations, and Clinical Skills Development—the curriculum focuses on cultural responsiveness, communication, and clinical practice, preparing IENs for real-world healthcare environments. Through immersive simulations, learners develop decision-making and clinical judgment skills, ensuring they are job-ready upon completion. This approach not only addresses skill gaps but also strengthens Canada’s healthcare workforce, bridging the path to employment for IENs. Join us to learn how micro-credentials can help meet the growing demand for skilled healthcare professionals in Canada.
