Adoption Principles 3: Identifying OER Support

Whether your goal is to adopt, create, or learn more about OER, there is plenty of support within your own university or college that you can access to help on your journey with using OER’s.

Within Your Institution

There is a good chance that within your institution there is an OER-focused faculty member or group that can help you on your OER adoption journey. CARL-ARBC has identified open educational support across Canada that highlight institutions that are highly engaged in OER. But here are a couple of sources of support that may exist within your institution.

OER Studio/Toolkits – There are postsecondary institutions that have OER design studios that support faculty members in creating and adopting OER’s. An OER toolkit is a curated online guide that can help with the OER process. Examples of toolkits are below.

OER Ranger – Through eCampusOntario, participants from Ontario postsecondary institutions were trained in OER knowledge and was tasked to champion the use of OER’s in their institution.

OER Librarian – An OER librarian can assist in your OER journey including finding and adopting OER’s. This role may also be under the title of digital or digital scholarship librarian.

Outside Your Institution

There is also support outside you institution on adoption and OER’s. This can look like programs, training, advocacy and repositories to aid in making the use of OER’s easier and simpler. Using these avenues of support will provide you with the knowledge to the importance of adopting OER’s and advocating for them in your institution.

eCampusOntario Open Library – The Open Library has a repository of OER’s, open publishing tools, workshops and reference support around the use of OER’s. There is also the OOLN which is a community initiative to promote the growth of open educational resources.

Working Group/Committee – Working groups and committees can be found within your institution but if they don’t, there are committees centered around OER like CARL, DOERS and more.

OER Professional Development – To have a fully rounded knowledge of adopting, using or creating OER’s in your teaching, there are professional development opportunities available to you. One of them is Mastering Open Ed hosted by the Open Library at eCampusOntario.
